An Act regarding identity fraud

An Act regarding identity fraud

(S. 91)

Lead Sponsor: Senator Sonia Chang-Díaz

This bill clarifies jurisdiction for the investigation of identity theft crimes, making explicit that identity theft cases will be referred to and pursued by the locality in which the victim resides. The bill was developed in response to constituent experiences of unclear lines of responsibility when they were victims of identity theft. It also directs the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation to establish a Division of Privacy Protection, charged with creating a centralized repository to log complaints of identity fraud and adopting regulations designed to benefit consumers regarding intake, investigation, and prosecution of identity fraud.
